AVI-SPL Awards NEC Projector to Pemayetv Emahakv Charter School

School Earned the Most Votes for AV Week Projector Giveaway Contest

After an exciting AV Week Projector Giveaway contest, AVI-SPL recently awarded the NEC Display projector to Pemayetv Emahakv Charter School in Okeechobee, Florida.

In honor of 2010’s AV Week, AVI-SPL teamed up with NEC Display to present a new NEC M260X projector to a K-12 school in the U.S. To enter, schools were asked to submit a 140-character response to “Why does your school need a new projector?” All entries were then posted on AVI-SPL’s blog for the public to vote. More than 40 schools entered the contest and more than 2,000 votes were cast. With a total of 401 votes, Pemayetv Emahakv took the prize, just 10 votes ahead of the next school.

“Many of the teachers, students and their families stayed up late the night of the contest because we were all so excited to see the final results,” said Alisha Pearce, media specialist, Pemayetv Emahakv. “I knew at midnight when the contest closed that our school had won.”

Pemayetv Emahakv is located on the Brighton Seminole Reservation in Glades County, Florida. The K-8 school opened on the reservation in August 2007, and today teaches 233 students. It was founded by the Seminole Tribe in order to preserve their rich heritage, and leave a lasting influence with future generations.  Pemayetv Emahakv  currently fills its curriculum with Seminole cultural, language, and arts and crafts classes.

“We’re planning to use our projector in the school’s media center so we can create a 21st century learning environment,” Pearce said. “The students love the technology – they’re actively involved and they learn so much. The hands-on approach is the way to go with education.”

Pemayetv Emahakv partnered up with AVI-SPL back in 2008 to begin implementing more technology into the classroom. Today, the school has a SMART board in every classroom in addition to document cameras, SMART slates and SMART interactive response systems.

“We want our students to be interactive with their learning and technology allows for that,” said Russ Brown, principal and CEO of Pemayetv Emahakv.. “The teachers are able to make creative lesson plans utilizing the technology and AVI-SPL’s training has helped the teachers get comfortable with the technology.”

SMART Boards Prove Effective for Academy at the Farm’s Inclusive Curriculum

“We thought the teachers would really love it. Well, the problem is that they did!” — Ray Polk, Instructional Technology Coordinator, Academy at the Farm

Based in Dade City, Fla., Academy at the Farm is a unique K-8 charter school that serves nearly 400 students a year. Today, this A-rated school features SMART’s 680i interactive white boards and Elmo document cameras in nearly every classroom. “This technology has helped increased our kids’ enthusiasm, as well as that of our teachers,” says Director Mike Rom.

A Dramatic Difference
The SMART Notebook software has proven invaluable to the Academy teachers, from watching eager kindergartners perfect their penmanship to using the innovative programs to increase algebra skills among eighth graders. The school has also improved overall communications, using the SMART Boards to stream morning and afternoon announcements, and even have their students conduct live chats with Congresswoman Ginny Brown-Waite.

SMART Table Helps Increase Collaborative Learning

“It’s really cool,” says one shy youngster, a pre-schooler at the exclusive Baldwin Academy in Pacific Beach. “It’s a lot of fun,” adds another, breaking into a smile. When Baldwin became selected as the only pilot school for the SMART Table in Southern California, these precocious learners immediately demonstrated the rewards. AVI-SPL’s Education Market Manager, Maggie McGill, was instrumental in helping to make a difference.

“The best benefit of the SMART Table is its ability to promote collaborative learning, with room for up to eight students to interact,” says McGill. With a format similar to that of an iPhone, the SMART Table is the first multitouch, multiuser interactive learning center that allows groups of primary school students to work simultaneously on its surface. From math to social studies to art, the SMART Table allows the youngest of learners to take a fun, hands-on approach to their activities. Best of all, it helps teachers create new and unique collaborative learning activities with minimal preparation time.

“For me to be able to work with their pre-K teacher and get her true feedback has been phenomenal,” adds McGill. “Both she and the kids absolutely love it.”

The SMART Table has currently been on loan to Baldwin since August; they hope to purchase the technology in the near future.

SMART Notebook SE Bracelets Bridge Home-School Divide

In only their second year in operation, Nantucket Elementary School has quickly grown a reputation for being one of the most technologically-savvy in the area. AVI-SPL’s Education Market Manager, Erin Minich, has nurtured the relationship, working with them to integrate SMART interactive whiteboards in every classroom and launch their status as a SMART showcase school.

So when she informed Nantucket of the exciting technology behind SMART bracelets, school administrators were eager to introduce this new resource SMART braceletto their students. Equipped with a 2GB hard drive within their bands, the bracelets have easily become one of the most popular items within the SMART Notebook Student Edition (SE) package. At 50 bracelets for only $50 each, Nantucket Principal Diana Strohecker sees it as an invaluable investment for her fifth graders.

As a true plug-n-play innovation, students using the bracelets have the ability to create assignments in school and take it home to work on, or even at the library. Once plugged into any USB port – regardless of platform – students can use the bracelets’ pre-packaged software to create presentations that featured embedded videos, links, images and more.

“As I tell our educators, the SMART bracelet is almost like a ‘digital binder’ that they can take with them anywhere they go, easily putting control in the hands of the students,” says Minich. “There’s so much technology available in the schools, but students can be at a disadvantage if they don’t have that same level of technology at home,” she adds. “These bracelets are a wonderful tool, greatly helping to bridge the home-school divide when it comes to educational technology.”
