Summer Institute for Technology Integration Week in Review

The Summer Institute for Technology Integration (SiTi), sponsored by AVI-SPL and hosted by Florida Southern College in Lakeland July 11-15, welcomed eighty educators from as far away as Taiwan to this residential-based immersive professional development experience. Teachers spent the week creating engaging lessons using SMART Notebook Software, digital cameras, document cameras, and SMART Response Software.

The motivational Keynote address, led by Dr. Jennifer Brown King, professor and author of TechXtraordinary Integration inspired and prepared the audience to be HOT teachers; that’s right, as Dr. King stated, “You will all be smokin’ HOT teachers by end of the week!” She was referring to Bloom’s Taxonomy, which the SiTi instructors used to move attendees from teaching their students Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) to Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) through instructional technology best practices. By the end of the week, there were eighty smokin’ HOT teachers equipped with the knowledge and skills to implement technology effectively in their classrooms!

Sessions were led by eight extraordinary teacher teams (pictured below) from Hillsborough County Schools, who spent not just five days, but the evenings coaching and encouraging their students.

Florida Southern College staff generously provided beautiful accommodations at Nicholas Hall, with breathtaking views of Lake Hollingsworth. Attendees were also treated to delicious meals and scrumptious desserts in the dining hall and during session breaks. (No dieting that week!)

FSC Tech Buddies, students of Dr. King’s Education Courses, spent the week assisting attendees throughout the day and late into the evening with creating their final Showcase Project which the attendees presented on Friday morning. The closing ceremony on Friday featured Showcase Presentations where a few lucky attendees took home some cool new technology for their classrooms!

The Summer Institute for Technology Integration theme of partnership, friendship, community, education resonated throughout the week as attendees, coaches and tech buddies formed bonds through living and working together that will last long after the event ended.

We are looking forward to a continued partnership with Dr. Jennifer Brown King and Florida Southern College, and to take the Institute “on the road” to replicate in other areas of Florida and beyond!

Wise up with AVI-SPL’s Latest Education Technology Solutions at FETC 2011

FETC 2011 logoHow do you ensure students are learning in the most interactive and dynamic classroom possible? By integrating functional classroom technology that livens up the lesson plan and effectively train teachers so they’re getting the maximum benefits from their technology. That’s why AVI-SPL is heading to FETC 2011 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., this Feb. 1-3, where they’ll demonstrate professional development courses in addition to illustrating the benefits of incorporating video production into the classroom.

“We want our teachers to learn as much as possible when it comes to technology’s versatility in the classroom, and to use this knowledge to help improve their interactions, as well as student engagement,” says Robert Moss, vice president of education sales, AVI-SPL. “Professional development training is a critical step in the right direction, one that can benefit not only teachers, but their students as well.”

Beginning Tuesday evening Feb. 1, AVI-SPL will host 30-minute Professional Development presentations at booth # 1413 at FETC throughout the 3-day show. For a complete schedule, see below.

AVI-SPL’s training and professional development classes, ranging from 30 minutes to full day courses, are taught by SMART-certified trainers. Training Courses include SMART Notebook Basics, SMART Table Basics and SMART Grade Level Specific Notebook Advanced, among others. Because learning doesn’t stop when class is over, registered participants gain access to an online database library of supporting training materials. They also receive a video of their training session for future reference.

Additionally, AVI-SPL’s booth will host presentations on the benefits of incorporating video production into the classroom. According to research, people tend to retain 70-90 percent of what we see, hear and do, so what better way to get students learning more than with the hands-on experience of producing a video. Led by Sony, the presentations will show how K-12 educators can bring video production into the learning environment whether it’s video book reports, video yearbooks or school TV news programs.

The Integrating Video Production into the Classroom presentations will also begin Tuesday evening on Feb. 1. Refer to the below list for the complete schedule.

In addition, AVI-SPL will be giving away several prizes at the show including:

SMART Table Helps Increase Collaborative Learning

“It’s really cool,” says one shy youngster, a pre-schooler at the exclusive Baldwin Academy in Pacific Beach. “It’s a lot of fun,” adds another, breaking into a smile. When Baldwin became selected as the only pilot school for the SMART Table in Southern California, these precocious learners immediately demonstrated the rewards. AVI-SPL’s Education Market Manager, Maggie McGill, was instrumental in helping to make a difference.

“The best benefit of the SMART Table is its ability to promote collaborative learning, with room for up to eight students to interact,” says McGill. With a format similar to that of an iPhone, the SMART Table is the first multitouch, multiuser interactive learning center that allows groups of primary school students to work simultaneously on its surface. From math to social studies to art, the SMART Table allows the youngest of learners to take a fun, hands-on approach to their activities. Best of all, it helps teachers create new and unique collaborative learning activities with minimal preparation time.

“For me to be able to work with their pre-K teacher and get her true feedback has been phenomenal,” adds McGill. “Both she and the kids absolutely love it.”

The SMART Table has currently been on loan to Baldwin since August; they hope to purchase the technology in the near future.

SMART Notebook SE Bracelets Bridge Home-School Divide

In only their second year in operation, Nantucket Elementary School has quickly grown a reputation for being one of the most technologically-savvy in the area. AVI-SPL’s Education Market Manager, Erin Minich, has nurtured the relationship, working with them to integrate SMART interactive whiteboards in every classroom and launch their status as a SMART showcase school.

So when she informed Nantucket of the exciting technology behind SMART bracelets, school administrators were eager to introduce this new resource SMART braceletto their students. Equipped with a 2GB hard drive within their bands, the bracelets have easily become one of the most popular items within the SMART Notebook Student Edition (SE) package. At 50 bracelets for only $50 each, Nantucket Principal Diana Strohecker sees it as an invaluable investment for her fifth graders.

As a true plug-n-play innovation, students using the bracelets have the ability to create assignments in school and take it home to work on, or even at the library. Once plugged into any USB port – regardless of platform – students can use the bracelets’ pre-packaged software to create presentations that featured embedded videos, links, images and more.

“As I tell our educators, the SMART bracelet is almost like a ‘digital binder’ that they can take with them anywhere they go, easily putting control in the hands of the students,” says Minich. “There’s so much technology available in the schools, but students can be at a disadvantage if they don’t have that same level of technology at home,” she adds. “These bracelets are a wonderful tool, greatly helping to bridge the home-school divide when it comes to educational technology.”
