AV Week 2010 Wrap-Up

…And just like that, AV Week 2010 has passed. Here’s a quick look back at all of the fun we had this year.

AV Week Projector Giveaway

In honor of AV Week 2010, AVI-SPL teamed up with NEC Display to award a brand new NEC M260X projector to a K-12 school here in the United States. We received more than 40 entries in total and, after a close race, Pemayetv Emahakv Charter School in Okeechobee, FL, was named the winner. Congratulations! Thanks to everyone who submitted entries and voted! We’ll post photos of the winner accepting the projector soon.

AV Trivia

AV Week isn’t just about giveaways — it’s about educating everyone about the AV industry. In keeping with this theme, we asked our online followers and employees various trivia questions all week. To keep it fun, we gave away cool prize packs, too!

AV Spirit Days

AVI-SPL employees showed their AV pride all week with our themed Spirit Days. We posted all of the entries (nearly 60 in all!) on Facebook and let our fans pick their favorites. Click the thumbnails to view full-size photos of our winners!

In keeping with the educational focus of AV Week, we posted relevant facts on our employee portal for each day, including tidbits about manufacturer partners, products, company history, training and certification. Our CEO John Zettel wrapped up the week with an employee address about his vision for the future of AVI-SPL and the AV industry.

Manufacturer Monday

On Monday, employees sported manufacturer attire. AVI-SPL’s Denver office put on a great show and was our clear Manufacturer Monday winner! One employee didn’t have any gear from his favorite manufacturers (Revolabs & Biamp), so he grabbed some boxes and jumped in the photo!

Team Tuesday

We’ve got spirit – yes we do, we’ve got spirit – how ‘bout you? On Tuesday, we asked employees to show their AVI-SPL pride by wearing our signature blue and green. Our winner was Phil from our Dubai office, who paired a blue & green tie with a sharp black suit. Our employees are lookin’ good all around the world.

Geek It Up Wednesday

Horn-rimmed glasses, pocket protectors, bowties, oh my! AV is typically seen as an industry for geeks, so we decided to embrace the stereotype for Geek It Up Wednesday! A few of our employees proved that geek can be chic in this challenge. Jessica in Tampa took home the prize.

Throwback Thursday

AV people just love technology. On Thursday, we challenged employees to show off their most prized vintage piece of equipment. We were blown away by the 30+ pieces of old tech that were submitted! Slide projectors, record players, Apple computers from the 1980s, and even an 8-track of the original Star Wars soundtrack were submitted (along with LOTS of other stuff!). The voting was tight, but Frank from our Boston office won with his entry– a stereo amplifier that he bought with money earned from his paper route in 1965. Cool!

Future Friday

On Friday, we asked employees to submit photos of their most high-tech piece of equipment. Dave from Creative Show Services submitted a photo of his new iPad and took home Friday’s prize.

AV Week Proclamation

Much to our delight, Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio signed a proclamation declaring October 17-23, 2010 to be officially AV Week across the city.

“Mayor Iorio’s proclamation further solidifies the immense impact the audiovisual industry has on the public,” said John Zettel, CEO, AVI-SPL. “With companies looking at ways to reduce travel costs and be more environmentally friendly, we’re seeing more and more adoption of videoconferencing and Telepresence solutions.” Zettel added, “We’re very proud to be headquartered in Tampa. The region’s diverse industry landscape combined with the abundance of talented professionals makes Tampa an ideal place to lay down a company’s roots.”

Meet the Control Room Group

By David Jones, Sales Manager Control Room Group

The Control Room Group (AKA the CRG) is a business unit of AVI-SPL. Created in 2002 by current CRG Vice President Sean LaNeve, the CRG works exclusively in the mission critical control room market space.

We design, integrate, install and support full spectrum command and control facilities. Our client list includes the United States Military, the Florida Department of Transportation, Bank of America and Nevada Power.

US Central Command

As we say at the CRG, there is no “one size fits all” control room design. We specialize in customized solutions for our clients. This requires strategic partnerships with the manufacturers of products used in the modern control room, including video cube technology, flat panel displays, human machine interface (HMI) systems and video processing technology.

The CRG is composed of teams that focus solely on one of four vertical markets:

  • Government
  • Utilities & Process Control
  • Transportation
  • Corporate (Network and Security Operations Centers)

The CRG teams are experts in their markets. They speak the language of the control room and understand the nuances of control center operations. But most importantly, they are familiar with the system designs that best address the day-to-day issues and opportunities that arise in each vertical market.

Our Utilities & Process Control team alone has more than 60 years of direct experience in the electric utility industry. The team has successfully completed more than 35 control room projects that range from small cooperatives to the largest Investor Owned Utilities in North America. All of our vertical teams have similar success and service records. It is our industry-specific structure and focus that makes the CRG a unique and valued strategic partner to our clients.

Meet David Jones My intent is to keep this blog as current and informative as possible. Our industry expertise enables us to provide you with statistical and anecdotal information about all aspects of the mission critical control room market.

Please don’t hesitate to give us your feedback – questions, comments or critiques. We welcome the opportunity to talk with you.

Hillsborough County Students Improve Teamwork, Learning with SMART Table

photo by Andy Jones, Tampa TribuneAVI-SPL recently helped Hillsborough County students get their first look at the dynamic features of SMART Technologies latest innovation, the SMART Table. The fourth graders at Lee Elementary Magnet School in Tampa, Fla., are among the first students in the county – and state – to have access to this exciting technology. From math to social studies to art, the SMART Table allows the youngest of learners to take a fun, hands on approach to their activities. Best of all, it helps teachers create new and unique collaborative learning activities with minimal preparation time.

“AVI-SPL’s education market manager, Kristin Kraemer, has been great in helping us get the SMART Table at Lee Elementary and keeping me up-to-date on the latest information,” says Gregory Hart, magnet technology and curriculum specialist for Hillsborough County Public Schools. “The SMART Table is part of our 21st Century Learning Environment project, which involves increasing the amount of interactive technology in the classroom. I find that students learn better when they learn with each other, and that is what the SMART table does best.”

Software content can be customized with the SMART Table Toolkit, which is included with each SMART Table. Teachers can easily customize lesson activity content by accessing the Gallery in SMART Notebook, which contains more than 6,600 learning objects.
