Advice for Planning Better Workspaces

Tuesday morning was a good time to be at this week’s IFMA 2016. That’s because attendees at the annual event for facilities managers got to hear how factors like technology, real estate prices, and people’s expectations are affecting the look and functionality of the workplace.

AVI-SPL Senior Vice President of Sales and Operations Dale Bottcher delivered a wealth of advice on how to go about improving the workplace so that it’s more suitable for collaboration: identifying all stakeholders, involving IT from the outset, and defining your goals, which should include:

  • Allow mobile workers to participate
  • Variety of bookable and non-bookable rooms
  • Fast start-up time for meetings
  • Onsite participants contribute from their personal devices

“We need to be prepared in the way that we plan space and facilities so that we have the flexibility to adapt,” Dale told attendees. He reminded them that work is a social activity, and that the workplace can be designed to give people a deeper sense of meaning and well being.

In the spirit of Dale’s presentation, I’m sharing with you our guide to the Internet of Things (IoT) for facilities managers. This paper explains IoT, why it has become prominent in discussions around business performance, and the steps you can take to deploy solutions that make it easier to monitor devices in meetings rooms, reserve rooms, and help with space planning.

Impressed by the Business Tech

AVI-SPL’s annual sales conference is always a big highlight on my calendar because I get to see firsthand what we are doing throughout our organization to improve service to our customers so that companies, universities, and departments are better for working with us.

I also get to see our top partners showcase their latest products during our Partner Expo. This year I visited every booth — nearly 40, if memory serves — and it was a treat to see systems and devices that improve so much of the meeting experience. (I just considered correcting that last line to say “meeting room experience,” but with the technology I saw, the type you can fit in a backpack, meetings can happen anywhere we want them to.)

Donning a pair of headphones at Shure’s booth, I smiled like a little kid at the ability for sound patterns to be adjusted in a noisy environment so that our presenter’s voice was easily heard above the din. I stood before a massive video wall while a Bluescape representative used his tablet to create meeting rooms in the cloud, ones where people can annotate and add documents and media across 160 acres of workspace for real-time collaboration. If you’re an IT manager in need of connectors that won’t jiggle loose, Middle Atlantic was eager to demonstrate.

Tens of thousands of people will be able to see these and as-yet unannounced products at the upcoming InfoComm show in Las Vegas this June. But you don’t have to visit an industry conference to learn about the amazing technologies available to improve the way you deliver messages, bring teams together, and engage visitors and staff alike. I work with people who have the expertise to understand the challenges your organization is facing and how to turn those into opportunities for success. Visualize Your Meeting Spaces With Help From AVI-SPL

At this month’s Integrated Systems Europe in Amsterdam, visitors to the AVI-SPL booth were treated to an app that our sales team uses with clients to customize meeting room layouts and equipment, including huddle spaces. In the photo to the right, one of our representatives is taking a guest through the process of exploring space configurations.

Commercial Integrator has an overview of our appearance at ISE 2016, touching on the EZ app, the Microsoft Surface Hub, and our ability to support companies anywhere in the world.
