A story in the October issue of THE Journal focused on education in rural schools, with a look at schools on Kodiak Island, Alaska. Kodiak Island is approximately 300 miles southwest of Anchorage, separated from the mainland by the Shelikof Strait. Seven out of the 15 schools are accessible only by air or boat. Each school has two teachers. During my tenure with SMART, I recall one of our education consultants, Jaimie Ashton, telling the story about flying in a two-seater airplane to get to one of these schools for a professional development session, and having to sleep in the school’s locker facility!

No matter where they are, all children in the United States should have equal access to a quality education, and the Kodiak Island district is using distance learning technology through video conferencing (VTC) to reach that goal. According to the October 2011 issue of THE Journal, “The use of distance learning technology has turned around once-struggling schools by not only enabling students to learn from better-qualified instructors, but also by expanding the breadth of content that can be offered.” Students are able to take Pre-Calculus, participate in science labs in grades 3 through 8, Advanced Comp, Literature and Music.

AVI-SPL has the solutions to support distance learning through VTC for not only rural districts, but all districts that need to provide specialized classes to meet federal requirements. For example most, schools cannot afford to employ a highly qualified teacher for a limited number of students who need to take AP Calculus, Mandarin languages, or other specialized courses. However, VTC can bring together several students throughout the district (or region, nation or world!) with one teacher!

Enhance your classroom education with distance learning technology implemented and supported by AVI-SPL. Speak to one of our experts at 1-800-282-6733 or send an email to sales@avispl.com, and we’ll show you how we can improve your learning environment.

I am thrilled to announce that Georganne Young will be joining our team as an Education Consultant for the state of Georgia.

Georganne joins AVI-SPL with 35 years of experience in education, including administrative positions at the middle and high school levels.

The implementation of technology into instruction is a passion of special interest to Georganne. As the principal of a middle school designated as one of the pilot schools for Cobb’s 21st Century Technology initiative, she was involved in the implementation of SMART technology into the classroom from the actual installation of the products, through the training (which she completed along with the teachers), to the evaluation of teacher use of this technology in daily classroom teaching. Noting a significant increase in student engagement and a corresponding rise in test scores, Georganne supports Marzano’s studies of the impact of technology in the classroom. She eagerly welcomes the chance to help others move into the 21st century of instruction and engagement.

A few goals for the Professional Development Team for 2012 will be to host Technology Conferences, Workshops, Integration Institutes, support sales, and build ongoing professional development plans for schools and districts that will generate revenue for AVI-SPL.

Georganne states: “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to become the AVI-SPL Education Consultant for Georgia! Moving into my dream job will allow me to share my passion for technology in the classroom and let me continue to mentor others as we (the wonderful AVI-SPL Education Consultant team!) facilitate the seamless integration of technological innovations into instructional practices. I can’t wait to work with the AVI-SPL team and especially with Jodi Carroll, the Education Marketing Manager for Georgia. Look out, Georgia – we are ready to hit the road with technology for the classroom! Just watch student engagement, achievement and success hit new heights in the classrooms with our products!”

The Summer Institute for Technology Integration (SiTi), sponsored by AVI-SPL and hosted by Florida Southern College in Lakeland July 11-15, welcomed eighty educators from as far away as Taiwan to this residential-based immersive professional development experience. Teachers spent the week creating engaging lessons using SMART Notebook Software, digital cameras, document cameras, and SMART Response Software.

The motivational Keynote address, led by Dr. Jennifer Brown King, professor and author of TechXtraordinary Integration inspired and prepared the audience to be HOT teachers; that’s right, as Dr. King stated, “You will all be smokin’ HOT teachers by end of the week!” She was referring to Bloom’s Taxonomy, which the SiTi instructors used to move attendees from teaching their students Lower Order Thinking Skills (LOTS) to Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) through instructional technology best practices. By the end of the week, there were eighty smokin’ HOT teachers equipped with the knowledge and skills to implement technology effectively in their classrooms!

Sessions were led by eight extraordinary teacher teams (pictured below) from Hillsborough County Schools, who spent not just five days, but the evenings coaching and encouraging their students.

L-R: Jenny Simmonds, Ora Tanner, Rachel Motomal, Kelly Derushia, Danny Lott (FSC), Dr. Jennifer Brown King (FSC), Michelle Clinton, Tina Hancock, Lisa Pennington, Lee Collier

Click here to watch an Animoto video of the SiTi week! >>

Florida Southern College staff generously provided beautiful accommodations at Nicholas Hall, with breathtaking views of Lake Hollingsworth. Attendees were also treated to delicious meals and scrumptious desserts in the dining hall and during session breaks. (No dieting that week!)

FSC Tech Buddies, students of Dr. King’s Education Courses, spent the week assisting attendees throughout the day and late into the evening with creating their final Showcase Project which the attendees presented on Friday morning. The closing ceremony on Friday featured Showcase Presentations where a few lucky attendees took home some cool new technology for their classrooms!

The Summer Institute for Technology Integration theme of partnership, friendship, community, education resonated throughout the week as attendees, coaches and tech buddies formed bonds through living and working together that will last long after the event ended.

We are looking forward to a continued partnership with Dr. Jennifer Brown King and Florida Southern College, and to take the Institute “on the road” to replicate in other areas of Florida and beyond!

Recently, AVI-SPL has had the pleasure of welcoming Patti Palancia to its team as education consultant. Palancia brings considerable experience to this role; prior to joining the company, she worked five years for SMART, the leading provider of interactive whiteboards and related technology solutions for the classroom.

Palancia’s extensive background in the field of education includes 13 years as a teacher in Ohio and Florida. She’s also been a clinical educator, teaching classroom management skills to students from St. Petersburg College and the University of South Florida. In the near future, she plans to extend her impressive credentials even further by working toward a master’s degree in instructional design and technology.

During this discussion, Palancia talks about her work here at AVI-SPL and how she helps educators and school administrators add the latest technology to their classrooms to enhance learning objectives.

Discuss your position here at AVI-SPL.

Palancia: I work with schools and districts to implement long-term professional development plans and events that support student achievement with what AVI-SPL provides for the classroom. Internally, I support the sales staff with current education initiatives and topics, and assist with pre-sale and post-sale consulting.

A lot of my time is spent supporting and organizing large-scale events, such as the Summer Institute for Technology Integration, which is being held July 11-15 at Florida Southern College in Lakeland. Attendees will learn how to take what they teach and adapt it to digital applications. As for myself, I’m going to be learning how to be a facilitator for this model of technology integration.

I’m also partnering with other educational institutions and foundations to host user conferences and professional development sessions. I should note that my role will change as the needs of AVI-SPL change; I can see us reaching a broader customer base by doing even larger events.

What can you offer to teachers and schools looking to improve their instructional technology resources?

Palancia: When a school decides to invest money in hardware, my role is to work with the school on a needs assessment for professional development. I ask them, “What are your needs? What is the culture and climate of your school?” Then I assess the climate and available technology and ask what they want to see when they do a teacher observation a year from now.

How do you go about implementing a professional development plan for a school?

Palancia: We can work up different pieces to make that happen, like a mentoring program where I can work with four or five teachers. That work-embedded modeling seems to be the most successful track. Teachers can also have a content creation seminar at their school, where I show them how to put the materials together. I’d love to be able to schedule a day or two at one school and go from class to class.

What are some of the most common challenges you hear from teachers?

Palancia: Time is a big challenge. Using technology seems like an additional thing teachers have to learn how to do. I tell them not to worry — your students already know a lot and they can help you. I encourage them to give ownership of the technology to their students. There’s one of you and 25 of them. Make it a classroom adventure.

The college’s 97,000 square foot structure, opened in 2010, infuses the university’s “green” principles, and leads the way as the first academic building in the State of Florida designed and built to LEED Platinum standards.

“In working with AVI-SPL, we initially chose the building’s technology because we were striving for the USGBC LEED platinum level certification,” says Brenda Coto, managing director of technology and innovation, FAU. “What we ultimately found is that we were able to change the way that professors teach, as well as change the way students are learning.” Technology integrated by AVI-SPL includes Tandberg video conferencing, Crestron DigitalMedia, the SMART Sympodium, Mitsubishi LaserVue’s for energy savings and more.

By integrating functional classroom technology that livens up the lesson plan and effectively training teachers so they’re getting the maximum benefits from their technology. That’s why AVI-SPL is heading to MACUL 2011 at Cobo Center in Detroit, March 16-18, where they’ll demonstrate professional development courses.

“We want our teachers to learn as much as possible when it comes to technology’s versatility in the classroom, and to use this knowledge to help improve their interactions, as well as student engagement,” says Robert Moss, vice president of education sales, AVI-SPL. “Professional development training is a critical step in the right direction, one that can benefit not only teachers, but their students as well.”

Beginning Thursday, March 17, AVI-SPL will host 20-minute Professional Development presentations at booth #445 at MACUL throughout the show. For a complete schedule, see below.

AVI-SPL’s training and professional development classes, ranging from 30 minutes to full day courses, are taught by SMART-certified trainers. Training Courses include SMART Notebook Basics, SMART Table Basics and SMART Grade Level Specific Notebook Advanced, among others. Because learning doesn’t stop when class is over, registered participants gain access to an online database library of supporting training materials. They also receive a video of their training session for future reference.

Also at AVI-SPL’s booth, AMX will demonstrate SchoolView, a solution that aligns with green-building initiatives that many school districts are facing. SchoolView automates management of energy-consuming resources like PCs and AV equipment, and further increases cost reductions by simplifying maintenance and support, which extends technology lifecycles. Did you know a school with 200 PCs left in sleep mode overnight during a typical school year will still consume approximately $3,000 of power? The AMX SchoolView solution is a scalable approach that takes advantage of existing school data networks by streamlining bell schedules, bringing network precision to clocks, and delivering audio paging and streaming video.

Beginning Thursday, March 17, AMX will host 20-minute SchoolView presentations entitled I Want to Be Automated, Safe, Green and Connected at booth #445 at MACUL throughout the show. For a complete schedule, see below.

In addition, AVI-SPL will be giving away several prizes at the show including:

A complete interactive classroom of the future featuring a SMART Board 680 and stand, SMART document camera, SMART Response, SMART Slate, Chief® CoPilot™, InFocus interactive projector, Balt® ReFlex™ chairs and presentation cart.

A Copernicus i-Rover

To learn how to be eligible to win, be sure to visit AVI-SPL’s booth (#455) at the show.

He heads Pemayetv Emahakv Charter School, located on the Brighton Seminole Reservation in Glades County, Fla.

The K-8 campus opened in August 2007 and today teaches 233 students. Founded by the Seminole Tribe in order to maintain the tribe’s cultural identity with future generations, Pemayetv Emahakv fills its curriculum with Seminole culture, language, and arts and crafts classes.

“Our motto here at school is to build successful leaders today, so that they can be unconquered leaders tomorrow,” says Brown. “When we can incorporate experiences of everyday life here at school, it makes assignments more interesting for the students. It also helps to keep them focused longer as they learn new lessons,” he adds.

Their Solution

Today, advanced audiovisual technology can be found in every classroom at Pemayetv Emahakv. The school’s cutting-edge solution focuses on the implementation of SMART interactive whiteboards, Elmo document cameras and high lumens XGA projectors from Dukane and Vivitek. SMART wireless slates, as well as the SMART Response system, were introduced into the curriculum as well.
