Video Conferencing for Patient Rehab

As I just learned in a recent article, patients in a healthcare center in Scotland can take part in rehab exercises for their COPD via video conferencing. Here’s the article: “Video Conferencing Technology Helps COPD Patients in Scotland.”

Similarly,  AVI-SPL helped a pain clinic in California reach out to patients via video conferencing so they can participate in rehab classes without having to drive for hours to the clinic’s headquarters. Watch the video below to hear from HELP Pain Clinic staff on the benefits of video conferencing. Then send any questions you may have to AVI-SPL.

AVI-SPL Introduces IP-based Video for the OR

ESSENCE – Integrated OR Solutions

AVI-SPL recently announced its latest innovation in surgical video platforms: ESSENCE (Enterprise Surgical Suite with Enhanced Network Control over Ethernet), is a suite of surgical video products that allows staff to control video, audio and data in the OR and lets practitioners remotely collaborate with surgeons.

The ESSENCE line includes three integrated operating rooms systems:

  •  ESSENCE-Digital: the DVI-D video platform
  •  ESSENCE-HD: scales all sources in the OR to a high definition 1080p format
  •  ESSENCE-IP: encodes images up to 4K into an Internet protocol format at the source and distributed at their native resolution without compression for artifact-free video

The ESSENCE video transport platform is an FDA-rated, Class 1 Medical Device that is not only agnostic to medical device manufacturers but also able to support legacy, current and future surgical technology because of its easily scalable design. It combines best practices with an open architecture allowing a variety of devices from different manufacturers, modalities and technologies to work together in one cohesive system.

As with all ESSENCE video platforms, the system is also designed to dramatically reduce the footprint normally associated with traditional AV equipment in the limited space of most ORs.

AVI-SPL’s Medical Team exhibited ESSENCE at the OR Manager Conference September 23-25 in National Harbor, Ma. To learn more about AVI-SPL’s healthcare solutions, visit AVI-SPL’s Healthcare page.

Meet an AVI-SPL Expert: Holt Stevens, senior design engineer

Holt StevensSenior Design Engineer Holt Stevens works from AVI-SPL’s  Greensboro, S.C., office. Holt has over 20  years of professional experience, and is responsible for the coordination, testing and integration of AV systems.

What did you do before you joined AVI-SPL?

After technical school I joined the U.S. Army, where I worked as a radar technician with the Improved Hawk Missile system. I was fortunate  to get a job with a systems integrator after I left a short three-year career in the military.  I have been working in the audio video communications industry for 30+ years.

What are you working on (or have worked on) that would be of interest to consultants?

Most of the consultant-designed systems that I have worked on are for higher education.  I have worked on a few house of worship systems and large-venue sound systems.

What made the projects you’re most proud of so special?

The job I am most proud of is a system that I did for the Missile Defense Agency. I have been able to do some real nice jobs in the corporate realm. I take pride being able to take a concept or design and exceed the customers’ expectations.

What are the most important things you’ve learned as an engineer, and how has it improved the way you work?

To pay attention to detail and communicate is the key to a successful system.  The things that have helped me personally are to develop AutoCAD skills and digital signal processing programming. Technology has really changed over the years and it is a must to keep up with it.  Learning the physics of light and sound has remained the same but we have much better tools to integrate a system.

How do you approach working with consultants? Is there a common approach to all of them?

Trust and listen. The consultant has a relationship with the customer.  It is not always clear why the system may or may not have certain features.  It is up to me to make sure the system performs to both the consultant’s design and customer’s expectations.

AVI-SPL Creative Show Services presents Tampa Small Business of the Year Awards

"Creative Show Services" Tampa
2012 Small Business of the Year Awards

On Friday, September 20th, the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce will hold its prestigious 33rd annual Small Business of the Year Awards banquet. Small businesses have been defined as the “backbone of America’s economy” and AVI-SPL Creative Show Services is proud to support it.

For more than 10 consecutive years, we have participated actively in the SBOY Awards preparations and execution. CS2 provides the sound, lighting, video, screens, projectors and 15+ crew members for the night of the event. Although the ceremony is only one night, we have already worked on this project for almost six months. CS2 works with the Tampa Chamber to enhance the show graphics provided to us. We created all of the video content, including intro videos and category videos that highlight the 23 finalists. In addition, all of the voiceovers and magic themed music was compiled by the CS2 team.

To qualify for Small Business of the Year, a company must have between 5-250 employees, have been in business for at least three years, and must be located in the Tampa Bay area. Every year the awards ceremony is thematically organized. This year’s theme is “The Magic of Small Business” and features magician and illusionist Nathan Coe Marsh, who was recommended by our creative team, and will perform live at the event.

Check back here after the event for post-show updates and photos from the event.

Congratulations to all the nominees!
